Valentine Garland
fl. 1884 - 1903
Valentine Thomas Garland was an animal artist who was born in Winchester during the 1840's. He began exhibiting his work at the Royal Academy in 1868 and he continued to exhibit at other venues such as Suffolk Street and the New Watercolour Society, for the rest of his life. Garland eventually moved to London where he sold his paintings most successfully. As in the fine example of his work shown here, Garland often included a still-life element in his pictures. These features were particularly popular and remain so today.
